IT Band Syndrome
If you experience any or all of these symptoms then you could be suffering from a condition called Iliotibial Band (ITB) Syndrome, most commonly seen in runners and cyclists as they repetitively use a larger knee range of motion. Pain is typically felt on the outside of the knee and symptoms typically increase with activity and subside with rest. Many times runners will notice that the pain will not begin until they are a couple of miles into their run. While this condition can be a result of a tight Iliotibial Band there are almost always other primary factors. In these cases therapy to the IT Band itself will only provide minimal results and will never alleviate the problem completely. Poor function of the feet, ankles, knees, hips, and/or low back can indirectly lead to a tight IT Band and without proper diagnosis and treatment of these areas the knee pain will continue to reappear.
- Pain on the outside of the knee
- Increased pain when running, cycling, or using stairs
- Repetitive popping noise at area of pain with activity
