Functional medicine is personally tailored medicine. It deals with primary prevention and underlying causes of chronic disease rather than simply chasing symptoms and masking them with medications. It is a patient-centred form of healthcare that is based on a set of principles that identify the body as being designed to function as an interconnected system. Functional medicine emphasizes true healing for you as a person rather than focusing on a disease. It is a partnership between doctor and patient and embraces the most current science in diagnosing early abnormalities that can lead to chronic illness.
How is Functional Medicine different from conventional medicine?
Functional medicine goes way beyond your traditional doctor. It is unlike conventional medicine because it looks at your body as a whole and considers all systems when treating illness and health conditions. It is not focused solely on treating symptoms, but on identifying and treating the root cause. Functional medicine at Performance Health and Wellness provides you with:
- Longer appointments with the doctor
- Advanced biomedical testing (blood, saliva, urine, and/or stool)
- Customized nutrition and fitness strategies to address your unique health status
- Team-based healthcare to ensure success
- Lifestyle recommendations to support your health journey
All aspects of your nutrition, exercise patterns, sleep quality, and levels of stress are considered while assessing your health. Functional medicine avoids addressing just one system in the body, as each and every system must be functioning properly for the entire person to be healthy.
What Does Functional Medicine Treat?
At Performance Health & Wellness, we focus on preventing illness by uncovering the underlying root cause of disease. Our goal is to figure out which systems in the body are not working optimally and then create effective strategies to help restore normal function to those areas. Many people come to our clinic with numerous symptoms and it is our job to figure out what is causing those symptoms. Functional Medicine is often recommended for the treatment of conditions that are often difficult to diagnose and treat.
Common conditions treated with Functional Medicine include:
- Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
- Fibromyalgia and Chronic Pain
- Hyperthyroid and Hypothyroid Conditions
- ‘Adrenal Fatigue’ (HPA Axis Dysfunction)
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
- Gluten Intolerance and Celiac Disease
- Food Sensitivities
- Weight gain
- Insomnia and Sleep Disorders
- Anxiety and Depression
- Autoimmune Diseases
- Hormone Imbalances
- Migraines and Headaches
Your evaluation looks to uncover the underlying causes and triggers of dysfunction, including how your body rids itself of toxins, hormone regulation, the health of your digestive tract, and how your body absorbs nutrients, immune system function, and the inflammatory response.

How the Process Works at Performance Health and Wellness
Our functional medicine process is very simple. We want to collect as much data as we can so that we can create a customized program for you to reach your goals as fast as possible. The first step is having you complete the unique questionnaire that will help us uncover any potential dysfunctions within the body.
To get started all you have to do is follow these steps:
- Complete our comprehensive Functional Medicine new client paperwork
- Return the completed paperwork to our office via fax, email, or in-person
- Once we receive your paperwork, we will call you to set up your initial 30 or 60-minute consultation (most require 60 minutes)
During your initial consultation, we will discuss your paperwork with you and learn more about your health and fitness goals. Using all of this information we will suggest the next steps which many times will include specific lab testing (blood, urine, saliva, and/or stool) to help uncover any underlying dysfunctions. Once we have the lab results back we will have all the information we need to create a customized functional medicine program to help you correct any abnormal lab values, improve the function of your entire body, and help you achieve your goals in the most efficient manner possible.
You can download our Functional Medicine paperwork from the new patient section of our website or call our office today and we will email them directly to you. We look forward to helping you optimize your health!

What is the Difference Between Functional Medicine and Nutritional Therapy?
In functional medicine, we do use nutritional therapy, but it is combined with other lifestyle, supplement, dietary, and movement strategies. Our programs are based on scientific data obtained from advanced biomedical blood, stool, urine, and/or saliva tests, all in conjunction with a thorough examination and consultation. All of this comprehensive data is used to uncover the root cause of your problem and allows us to customize an effective program just for you. Nutritional therapy is a great health tool and used within each of our Functional Medicine programs.
