Please Don't Count Calories

Setting aside for just a moment how stressful and inconvenient it is, I might actually consider recommending it if it actually worked. But the truth, scientifically, is that it doesn’t.

Because a calorie is not a calorie!

3,500 calories eaten does not translate directly into a pound of fat and 3,500 calories burned does not mean that you lost a pound of fat.

This is because our bodies are incredibly complex and our metabolism relates to a multitude of factors including stress, sleeping pattern, hormonal state, neurotransmitters, hydration, and even who you eat with.

While a calorie (as measured in a calorimeter and printed on a food label) is measured in a controlled calorimeter as an objective measure of the energy content of that food, our body is a variable and adaptable system that doesn’t treat every calorie the same way.

Have you ever seen one of those pictures of a body builder next to an absurdly unhealthy meal? They’ve primed their bodies to turn these absurdly calorie dense meals into muscle. Ever known someone (or maybe been someone) who tries eating 1400 calories per day but doesn’t lose any weight? It’s because they’ve trained their body to hold on to their fat.

Managing your weight isn’t as simple as just calories in and calories out. Which is good news because it means that achieving your happiest and healthiest weight is never a matter of starving yourself.

If your doctor or trainer has told you that you that losing weight is simply a matter of eating less and working out more, run! They clearly don’t understand biochemistry or fat loss.

If you’ve tried losing weight before but haven’t been successful then there is still hope. You just have to work with your biochemistry instead of fighting it.
