Pain Relief Is Just The Start

Traditionally, chiropractic has been seen as a way to relieve pain. And it absolutely is. The chiropractic adjustment is an incredibly quick and powerful tool that at times can almost seem like magic. Coupled with Active Release Technique manual therapy we are able to get incredible results. Patients come into the clinic with pain and almost all of them improve drastically within just a few visits.

Most clinics would be happy to just settle there. But I want more for my patients because I believe that when it comes to true health, pain relief is just the start.

Let me ask you, how do you define health?

Would you say that health is simply the absence of pain? Or would you say that well-being is more than that?

Well, technically, you’d be right either way.

The first definition of health in Merriam-Webster is simply “the state of being free of illness or injury”. Simple, yet unimaginative.

But the World Health Organization defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. Now we’re getting somewhere.

The first one is a very limited concept of health. Sadly, it’s the mindset that our culture at large has; it’s a very narrow idea of just how good one can feel. It tells us that if you’re in pain you can just pop a pill and wow! The pain goes away. Now I guess you’re healthy? Sure, you may feel “fine” but so do people who die of a heart attack right up until they don’t. That’s not the “health” that I want to promote in my clinic. It’s the second definition that I want for my patients.

I think it’s safe to say that everyone wants to be healthy. Who wouldn’t? In my 35 years of practice I have yet to have a patient who wants to be sick and in pain (at least consciously). So the real question is, what KIND of healthy? Which definition of health do you really want?

Most people, hopefully yourself included, would say the second one. Not only do you want to look good on the outside but you want to feel good and have your body functioning at full capacity.

But here’s the point I really want you to consider. Which definition of health are you actually practicing?

Almost all of my patients come into the clinic because they have pain. When you’re in pain your body goes into survival mode. Your number one priority is to get out of pain so you can get on with your life. With our powerful combination of chiropractic adjustments and Active Release Technique soft tissue therapy we are able to get 90% of our patients out of pain in just a few sessions. Once they’re out of pain, you could say that they are healthy again. Most practitioners would be happy to just settle there. And if you define health as simply the absence of pain then absolutely, you’re there.

But there’s so much more that they can achieve, so much more energy, youthfulness, and freedom they could have. THAT’s what I want for my patients. I want my patients to experience the second definition of health; in my opinion the only definition of health.

Once you’re out of pain you have an incredible opportunity to take a look at your life and see what other areas of health you can improve upon. If you’re willing to open your mind to the possibility of experiencing true health then pain relief is just the first step.
